Chapter 19

TOVAL

“You don’t wanna pull that trigger, kid.”

The Alpha’s voice was remarkably calm for a man who happened to be staring down the barrel of a loaded gun held in the trembling, oversized hands of a malnourished fifteen-year-old.

Toval knew this scene well, even if he couldn’t remember how he’d found himself reliving it. One moment, he’d fallen asleep on the couch while watching the evening news and the next, the door had blown open. The rest was a blur and the throbbing in his head combined with the hazy dreamscape of the memories being replayed before him didn’t bode well for his consciousness, but he was too transfixed on the scene to try to wake up.

There he was, a kid made of skin and bones stitched together with rage and the unrelenting compulsion to survive. He knew this moment. It was the first ray of light in the eight years of blackness that had elapsed since his mother’s death, even if he hadn’t recognized what the stone faced Alpha in fatigues with the surprisingly gentle eyes was offering him then.

It was salvation.

Mitchell had barely been twenty-five then, but he might as well have been all the other faceless Alphas of no specific age or rank who looked past the young beta rather than at him. The only difference was that Mitchell had seen him. Toval had been hiding underneath the bar his gang had taken over when Mitchell’s men had come in and gunned down every last one of them. All but one.

Toval had taken the gun off the dead leader of the Jackals, knowing he would die whether he defended himself or not. All he’d wanted then was to take a few of the bastards who’d infiltrated his territory with him. The Jackals were his adopted family, and they’d treated him far better than the real one ever had. Sure, Vern had a temper, but he’d given the orphaned beta a place to sleep and, more importantly, a purpose. The Mountain Ridge fuckers were far from their own lands, but they didn’t even have the decency to keep the territory they claimed. They funded their overpowered military by sending out mercenary teams to do dirty work for the highest bidder, and Toval knew exactly why they were there. They had already wiped out every other unaffiliated gang in the no man’s land between the Alliance and British territories. They’d saved the best for last.

“Don’t fucking tell me what I want to do,” Toval had seethed. His teeth were gritted into a snarl, but his racing heart and trembling knees betrayed his fear. “Federation scum.”

Mitchell’s chuckle had enraged him then, so much so that he’d nearly pulled the trigger. Decades later, sometimes Toval still wondered if the Alpha had ever realized just how close he’d come to dying then. He wondered if it would have mattered. Mitchell had taken a step closer, the thick soles of his leather combat boots crunching down on a pile of broken glass. “Federation? I take it you haven’t been in civics class for a while, kid.
